Student Videos Urge N.C. Voters to 'Voice Their Choice' this Election

RALEIGH – North Carolina high school and college students are calling on voters to make their voice heard at the polls this year.

Presented by Kids Voting North Carolina and the N.C. Center for Voter Education, the “Voice Your Choice” contest features student-produced videos urging all North Carolina voters to cast a ballot, regardless of party affiliation.

This year’s winners in the high school division are:

  • 1st Place -- John Schumacher, a student at Lincoln Charter School in Denver, N.C.
  • 2nd Place -- The Cary Teen Council in Cary, N.C.
  • 3rd Place -- Claire Connaghan, a home-schooled student from Apex, N.C.

Winners in the college division are:

  • 1st Place -- Austin Simmons, N.C. State University
  • 2nd Place -- Colleen Minan, East Carolina University
  • 3rd Place -- Christopher Hodum, Elon University

 “It's important that we keep students engaged in the political process and hear their voice and perspective,” said Daintry O'Brien, executive director of Kids Voting North Carolina.

“We hope the creative videos produced by these students will inspire voters of all ages to go to the polls this election as active players in democracy,” said Damon Circosta, executive director of the N.C. Center for Voter Education.

Before heading to the polls, voters can learn about the candidates awaiting them on the ballot by visiting NCVoterGuide.org, an online voter guide produced by the N.C. Center for Voter Education and UNC-TV.
