EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
North Carolina Center for Voter Education (NCCVE)
The North Carolina Center for Voter Education is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to informing and involving citizens so they may fully participate in democracy. NCCVE engages in nonpartisan public education and research, coalition-building and advocacy for election reforms.
The executive director works with policymakers, the media and key stakeholders on reform initiatives to improve the quality and responsiveness of the election system. NCCVE was founded in 1999 under the leadership of former state Attorney General and U.S. Senator Robert Morgan.
Executive Director’s Responsibilities:
- Manage all aspects of the operation of the organization, including but not limited to organizing, media relations, fundraising and lobbying.
- Report regularly to the board of directors and executive committee on the organization’s activities, performance, budget and administration.
- Develop long-range strategic plans and annual objectives, in coordination with staff and the board of directors, and monitor and report on the achievement of goals and objectives.
- Oversee fundraising planning and implementation, including identifying resource requirements, researching funding sources, establishing strategies to approach funders, submitting proposals and administering fundraising records and documentation.
- Coordinate communications between organizations and coalitions.
- Represent the organization in a variety of community, statewide and national functions.
- Recommend annual budget for board approval and prudently manage organization's resources within budget guidelines according to current laws and regulations.
- Responsible for supervision of all assigned staff, including interviewing; recommendation for hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing of work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Maintain strong community, public and inter-agency relationships.
- Work with policymakers to achieve the organization’s policy goals.
Preferred experience and qualifications:
- Strong commitment to far-reaching, long-term democratic reforms.
- High energy level, attention to detail, ability to work independently and collaboratively, excellent listening and verbal skills, sense of humor.
- Significant experience in political arena.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage staff, including experienced personnel (currently an Outreach Director and a Communications Director).
- Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple tasks and projects.
- Willingness to work long hours and travel state when needed.
- Working knowledge of North Carolina politics, election laws and practices helpful.
- Understanding of the legislative process and political dynamics of effective public policy advocacy.
- Experience in many of the following: public speaking, media relations, lobbying, grant writing, major donor solicitation, organizing and coalition-building.
- Bachelor’s degree; advanced degree, especially in law, desirable but not required.
